The paper deals with the reasons why social sciences and humanities contain so many (in comparison with natural sciences) essentially contested concepts and compares different methods of concept formation. Together with historicity of social reality, the constitutive role of meanings for the ontological structure of social reality (its intrinsic meaningfulness) precludes the existence of natural kinds. With natural kinds absent in societies and cultures, quarrels and discussions about concepts are bound to remain endemic for social sciences and humanities. Methods of concept formation are broadly differentiated into classical and non-classical. Classical methods involve the assumption of the tertium non datur: each object either belongs or not to an extension of a well-formed concept. Nonclassical concepts (fuzzy set concepts being the most important example) violate this assumption. Family resemblance concepts are considered as a special variety of classical concepts. In the dominant variety of classical concepts, their intensions display a conjunctive structure, and definitions state necessary and sufficient conditions of membership in their extensions. In family resemblance concepts, intensions have a disjunctive structure, and their definitions specify only sufficient conditions of membership. The author recommends to practitioners in social sciences and humanities a more frequent use of concepts with disjunctive intensions. However, he doubts the power of the non-classical methods of concept formation to alleviate difficulties with essentially contested concepts.
