| Sumario: | The article discusses the use of automated coding of printed directory information to decrease the time required to transfer this information into electronic data and its subsequent analysis by several software packages like Filemaker, Microsoft Excel, SPSS and SAS depending on the requirement. A schematic overview of the entire process is presented that involves four to five steps depending on the complexity and quality of the printed source material. Also, creation of an electronic picture of each page of the printed document is discussed along with the capturing of text in a camera. Finally, the process of conversion of picture to text document using the optical character recognition software is also explained.
