Through the art of tauromachy and its bull symbol, it is possible to trace a complex semi-private symbolism in the novel that enhances certain aspects of its realism by forging a textual 'middle space' in which contradictions like eros/thanatos, God/godless and salvation/damnation, among others, are considered dialectically. Instead of impoverishing the literary work, the contradictions contribute to the underlying structural frame of the text and the soteriological logic that sustains it. La popular novela de Fernán Caballero titulada La gaviota se ha criticado como un texto disonante repleto de todo tipo de contradicciones que emanan de la dislocación entre las afinidades románticas y las ambiciones realistas de la autora. A través del arte de la tauromaquia y el símbolo del toro, es posible trazar un sistema simbólico semi-hermético en la novela que realza algunos de sus aspectos realísticos en lo que podríamos denominar un 'espacio intermedio': un espacio textual en el que contradicciones como eros/thanatos, Dios/sin Dios y salvación/perdición, entre otras, son consideradas dialécticamente.
