It covers the basic characteristics of algal inhabited environments, the life history of cyanobacteria and algae in the water column and on the substrate, and the use of algae for assessing surface water quality. Methods of study in algology are outlined in broad outline, including the latest research directions. The next section discusses the different cyanobacterial and algal habitats, namely flowing waters, lakes, wetlands, terrestrial and extreme habitats. The phytoplankton and phytobenthos of the seas are mentioned very briefly, given the inland location of the Czech Republic.
