| Sumario: | The article focuses on the history of the efforts to reform and to make a standard form of written Chinese language. The efforts to reform and standardized the written Chinese language were driven by various factors, one of which is the desire to spread literacy so that China can compete with literate nations in the West. The Beijing dialect became the basis of written Chinese. Eventually, the standardization efforts produced schemes for Chinese phonetics scripts including Hanyu Pinyin which ultimately prevailed in China. |
