Sumario:Chapter I of the book "Magical Writing In Salasaca: Literacy And Power In Highland Ecuador", part of the Westview Case Studies in Anthropology book series, by Peter Wogan, edited by Edward F. Fischer is presented. It explores an interpretation of witchcraft beliefs and dwells on its implication on social identity, power and documentation. It also emphasizes the relevance of these beliefs to bureaucracy and church and state institutions. The concept of ethnic conflict and divisions is also noted.
