He published most of the young French composers of that period, including Bizet, Franck, Delibes, Guiraud, Lalo, Castillon, Godard, Saint-Saëns, Massenet, and many others. He provided a broad service for composers, helping to promote performances of their works both in France and abroad, and establishing at his premises on the Boulevard de la Madeleine a social center where musicians regularly gathered. Massenet was his star property, but in 1890 he was declared bankrupt. Massenet transferred his allegiance to Heugel, while Hartmann continued to work anonymously as a publisher. He was also a modest composer and a librettist who contributed to stage works by Massenet, Grandval, Leroux, Honnore, Hahn, Duvernoy, and Missa.
