| Sumario: | This paper examines the characteristics of the Nordic hero according to Santayana's creative and literary critical work, as they appear in Lucifer, Hamlet and Oliver Arden. The three exhibit certain common conceptual and behavioural modes of existence that give an accurate portrayal of what this hero is for him. To begin with, they adhere to a complete primacy of spirit, which, in the end, results in a destructive autonomy and distraction. Also, this autonomy leads to a paralysing permanent state of doubt, duty being the categorical imperative of their concrete actions. The lack of a true understanding of the world around them and the will to impose their conceptual schemata on it makes them feel alienated even from the people that are dearest to them. In these three characters there is also an ambivalent approach to the father figure and a type of Puritanism that cannot admit even the slightest condition of chaos in the universe. |
