| Sumario: | Samuel Carter Hall (1800-89) was the founding editor in 1839 of 'The Art-Union,' renamed 'The Art Journal' in 1848. Hall's objective was to create a forum for artists, art patrons, and art lovers dedicated to defining and promoting British art and talent. The successful journal provided information about competitions and exhibitions, feature articles on historical and technical subjects, news and gossip of the art world, a lively correspondence section, and several advertising pages. Hall's editorials were exhortative and often impassioned. Hall also edited several books featuring illustrations by English artists, and (after 1844) an illustrated supplement to his journal documenting decorative arts exhibits.
