      ab: It seems that visual perceptual tests may have some value as predictors of first grade reading achievement. Above first grade level these tests do not predict reading achievement, nor differentiate good from poor readers. Children who have the training programs designed to increase visual perceptual performance show improvement on perceptual tests but do not show greater achievement in reading than those who do not have this training. The studies cited in this article all relate to one visual perceptual program. Obviously it would be unwise to generalize to other programs which are designed to increase perceptual ability. These other programs, like all proposed solutions to children's learning problems, must stand the test of scientific inquiry.
