ab: This article presents information about the organization of a book promotion during National Library Week in 1958. In the 1950s librarians and book publishers were becoming concerned with the changes being brought to reading by television, cheap paperbacks, and book clubs. Publishers, feeling more threatened than librarians, organized the American Book Publishers Council (ABPC) to influence legislation that could effect their goals of expanding the availability of books and enlarging the audience of readers. The cooperation between the ABPC, librarians, civic leaders, and volunteers established a model of public and private partnership that would result in the creation of the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress in 1977.
