It notes that in the second half of the 18th century, German poets elevated Shakespeare as a literary model. In the 19th century, Shakespeare came to be considered the third great German poet after Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller and that within Germany Shakespeare was claimed variously by Protestants and Catholics.
