| Sumario: | This article examines the concept of race in the Hispanic world during the late 19th century through an analysis of the "blackface" make-up technique referred to in the episode about the false heir to the character Juanito Santa Cruz in the book "Fortunata y Jacinta" by Spanish author Benito Pérez Galdós. It explains that Galdós used this technique to address, among other things, class differences between the Spanish middle and working classes on the one hand and colonial slaves on the other. |
