Sumario:Self-paced instruction has been shown to be an effective teaching methodology, but the start-up costs are high. An intermediate methodology, that of competency-based testing, was used in an introductory data processing course. Results show (I) the average level of student competency was increased, (2) student satisfaction was increased, (3) the average grade in the course was increased, (4) student evaluation of the teaching effort was higher and (5) the proportion of students completing the course was increased.
