| Summary: | Gaithersburg, Maryland, learned the importance of a comprehensive security program following 2 significant computer security breaches in June 2001. A hacker guessed an employee's e-mail password and sent unwanted messages to employees, while another hacker used a security hole to deface one of the city's internal web sites. As a result, city management became much more aware of the risks associated with deploying and managing technology projects, management also became aware of the growing depth and breadth of security issues facing technology staff. In addition, the IT staff was able to demonstrate its value to the city by responding to the security problems quickly and capably.
