| Sumario: | Part of a special issue on the public domain. The writers examine the role and value of public domain data in scientific research and recent trends in data ownership in scientific research. They outline the economic and legal pressures on scientific data traditionally in the public domain and the threats posed by shifts in public-private boundaries to the established norms and practices supporting open access to and use of data for research. They argue that the scientific community must come to terms with real-world commercial pressures in order to manage its way out of the dilemmas of ownership that it faces. |
