| Sumario: | The article discusses the racial conflicts of 1969 to 1970 in Forrest City, Arkansas related to implementing federal laws and court decisions regarding desegregation and civil rights for African Americans. Divisions in the white community between social elites who favored moderation and negotiation, and less affluent whites, who tended to oppose compromise with blacks, are discussed. Also discussed are comparable divisions among blacks between those who favored legal approaches to conflict resolution and those who favored protest. |
