| Sumario: | Part of a special issue on Marc Galanter-influenced scholarship. A study was conducted to examine the issue of authority in socio-legal research. Data were obtained from a review of the emerging literature on Empirical Legal Studies (ELS). Findings revealed that socio-legal scholars from outside law schools have been attentive to the increasing influence of ELS and some have even subscribed to it, but, beneath the surface, these academics worry about the politics of the movement and its subservience to law; some are concerned that it is simply sociology of law in another form. Findings indicated, however, that ELS is good for socio-legal scholarship because it contains both essential ingredients for success in a professional market: knowledge and power. Findings are discussed in detail.
