| Sumario: | By the year 2010, information technology (infotech) will make many jobs more challenging and rewarding, but it may also lead to job loss, boredom, and depersonalization. Consisting primarily of computing combined with telecommunications and networking, infotech includes expert systems, imaging, automation, robotics, sensing technologies, and mechatronics. Infotech's influence on workers will be twofold. It will enable them to do more of their job through an intermediary, and it will change the nature of jobs because companies will restructure to take advantage of new capabilities. Infotech's likely impact on farmers, police officers, utility workers, salespeople, consultants, scientists, doctors, factory workers, pilots, and teachers is discussed; and four major conclusions that can be drawn about the effects of infotech on workers are presented.
