      ab: The future of computing is “Convergence and Digital Everything.” Convergence is the grand amalgamation of technologies that used to be separate, like computers and telephones, while Digital Everything is the even simpler idea that computers are becoming so tiny, powerful, and inexpensive that soon just about any object more complicated than pottery will have its own brain. Even the lowest predictions of the advances coming in the next decade will give tomorrow's computers a level of utility and convenience people can only dream of today. The true breakthrough technologies will be those that deliver completely new kinds of computers that are faster but also handle certain types of problem more efficiently or that can be built at a cost affordable to everybody. Three possibilities—DNA computers, quantum computers, and optical computers—and the chaos that the new computers will bring to the workplace are discussed.
