New and improved measures of risk, severity, and circumstances involved in work-related injuries, illnesses, and fatalities provide valuable data concerning the prevention of fatal and disabling incidents in the workplace. In 1993, the Bureau of Labor Statistics redesigned its long-standing safety and health survey to help identify areas of the private sector that have comparatively high risks of serious, nonfatal injury or illness resulting in lost work time and to focus on the severity of such incidents and how they took place. In addition, a separate census that systematically counts all fatal work injuries using a number of sources of data to identify, verify, and profile such incidents replaced the fatality estimates that were formerly used. The writers discuss the benefits arising from improvements in the statistical system used by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
