Sumario:An examination of the quality of jobs in the service sector. Pay, benefits, job security, occupational structure, and job safety in the service sector were examined. The evidence demonstrates that the services industry is very diverse in terms of job quality, with many service industries equaling or exceeding manufacturing and other industries in this regard. Consequently, employment shifts away from manufacturing and toward services do not necessarily imply a decline in overall job quality in the United States. These findings highlight the importance of assessing more than levels of average pay when examining the quality of jobs in a particular industry.
