As the problems associated with such employment are more serious in the long run, and as individuals are unaware that this is the case or have a short planning horizon, it may be that many who choose this type of employment will eventually suffer serious hardship. Apart from a few studies on the wage growth of part-time workers, there has so far been no research on these long-term effects. The writer uses the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth to investigate the long-term consequences of nontraditional employment on individuals' subsequent salaries and benefits in three fields.
