| Sumario: | The revision of the consumer price index (CPI) has provided an opportunity to start an extensive redesign of the Housing survey. The CPI consists of seven principal categories, the largest aggregate grouping of which is “housing.” Within the “housing” category, most of the relative importance belongs to the index for “owners' equivalent rent,” or “rental equivalence,” and that for “residential rent,” the data for which are attained through the Housing survey. Starting in 1999, the CPI for “rent” and “rental equivalence” is to be based on a new sample design and estimation methodology.
