ab: There is evidence that income inequality in the United States is increasing but wealth inequality is not. Income is the money that someone receives over a period of time, while wealth is the stock of assets that someone owns at a particular time. According to survey data from the Federal Reserve Board, the proportion of total wealth owned by the wealthiest 1 percent of households increased from 31.5 percent in 1983 to 36.2 percent in 1989 and then decreased to 30.4 percent in 1992. These figures indicate that the generally expressed concern regarding the purported rise in inequality during the 1980s is displaced: As a whole, U.S. society—both rich and poor—has been becoming richer at a roughly even rate.
