Sumario:The increased use of computer technology in the fabricated plate work industry's design and production operations has been a significant factor in the advance of productivity. Between 1982 and 1994, labor productivity in the industry increased at an average yearly rate of 1.8 percent. Although overall output actually fell by 0.1 percent annually over that period, employee hours declined more rapidly still, at an annual rate of 1.8 percent per year. The quicker decline in hours than in output was due in large part to technological advances in the industry: Computers have been employed in a large number of applications to benefit production and related operations, and they have also been an important supplement to the industry's initial design process.
