ab: Both the number and proportion of workers with contingent jobs—jobs that are structured to be short term or temporary—fell between 1995 and 1997. Although the incidence of contingent work declined during this time, it continues to be more common among women, youth, students, part-time workers, and in the construction and service industries. Contingent workers are found in both high- and low-skilled occupations. The writer discusses data on contingent work arrangements from the second special supplement to the Current Population survey on the topic, conducted in February 1997.
