| Sumario: | On December 16–17, 1998, in Washington D.C., the World Future Society organized a conference to entitled Y2K . . . Scenarios and Strategies: Coping with Disruptions and Managing Long-Term Consequences. At the conference, various concerned participants discussed the nature of the Y2K problem and the need for prompt action. Although most financial institutions seem adequately prepared for Y2K, imports, local supplies and services, utilities, federal government, local governments, and developing countries were identified as the areas most at risk. Most participants reiterated the seriousness of the problem, but Carlos Guedes of the Inter-America Development Bank claimed the paranoia was unnecessary and that most countries had graver problems.
