| Sumario: | Hazardous work environments put young people at risk of serious injuries. Between 1992 and 1997, 403 youths aged 17 and under died at work. These accidents occurred mainly in agriculture, retail trade, construction, and services. One-third of the fatalities occurred in family businesses, and around half involved various types of vehicles and equipment. The writers present a historical summary of youth employment in the United States and investigate data on fatal work injuries among young people, comparing their risks with those of all workers and providing a detailed examination of the events, equipment, and industries associated with these fatalities. An overview of nonfatal injuries incurred by young workers during 1996 is also provided.
