| Sumario: | There is a growing demand for skilled information technology (IT) professionals. The biggest IT group is employed in computer services firms, but large numbers also work in manufacturing, financial industries, government, and retail and wholesale trade. High turnover, as well as increasing demand, adds to employers' continuing scramble to fill IT vacancies. At the same time, it is increasingly evident that IT plays an important role in augmenting national productivity and sustaining economic growth. It is important, therefore, to find ways of meeting America's need for IT and skilled IT professionals. One response to the situation has been an increase in the numbers of skilled foreign workers permitted to work in the country under temporary “H-1B” visas. A long-term solution is required, however. The writer discusses the steps that can be taken to develop and deploy the IT skills of American workers.
