| Sumario: | The business community and government agencies generally use the seasonally adjusted data series provided by the Bureau of Labor Statistics to evaluate the economic environment. The seasonally adjusted series is preferred for several reasons, including the possibility that the presence of seasonality in time series obscures both the stage of the business cycle that the economy is in and the effects on the economy of interventions such as a rapid reduction in oil production. The writer presents a structural model–based method of seasonal adjustment—the state space model-based method—and details research conducted on this method and illustrates the method's advantages. |
