Sumario:The writers discuss labor productivity in the U.S. retail industry between 1987 and 1999. Output and labor productivity in retail trade underwent robust growth over the 1987–99 period. Healthy demand for retail goods corresponded with gains in labor productivity, and the increase in retail square footage greatly outstripped population growth over the period. Consequently, the industry has been confronted with overcapacity of retail space, which in turn has led to ongoing intense rivalry, consolidation under big corporations, and more bankruptcies and liquidations.
