| Sumario: | Despite the notion that high-technology industries have weathered recessions better than others during the 1981–82 recession only those industries with a large percentage of skilled workers and high research-and-development spending performed better, in terms of employment, than the nonfarm business sector. However, high-tech industries, regardless of labor and spending differences, performed better overall than total manufacturing during the recent recession. Two charts and four tables compare high-technology employment patterns to those of other sectors and provide figures for states and U.S. territories.
