ab: The human species is about to experience the most profound and transformative event in its history: the “Singularity.” This will be a future period in which the pace of technological change will be so quick and far-reaching that human existence on Earth will be permanently altered, with people combining their brain power—knowledge, skills, and personality quirks—with their computer power in order to think, reason, communicate, and create in ways that hardly seem possible at present. The start of the Singularity will be heralded by overlapping revolutions in genetics, nanotechnology, and robotics, and these will characterize the first half of the 21st century. The early stages of the genetics revolution are already under way, although the robotic revolution, covering artificial intelligence in all its forms, will be the most powerful of the changes.
