Experienced chess players asked to find the shortest route to checkmate all spotted a common five-move maneuver and then kept searching for something better, but they all missed a less-common three-move strategy. Merim Bilalic of Tübingen University in Germany dubs the Einstellung effect “dangerous” due to its invisibility. Chess experts forecast that 74 percent of Masters would find the short checkmate in the shadow of the long one, but just 18 percent did.
