| Sumario: | The commissioner of labor statistics testified before the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Aging concerning the use of alternative consumer price indexes in making cost-of-living adjustments in federal entitlement programs. In 1988, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) constructed an experimental index to represent the inflation rate experienced by older Americans. BLS research found that the experimental index rose slightly more than the two Consumer Price indexes. The experimental index does have several limitations, notably the larger sampling errors arising from its small sample size and the basing of some sample items on data representing all urban households.
