| Summary: | The Bureau of Labor Statistics area wage survey program focuses on pay relationships among certain white- and blue-collar occupations, industries, and areas of the country. Begun in 1947, the program initially surveyed eleven large cities but in the 1950s expanded to larger metropolitan areas, recognizing that an area's main population center may extend beyond a city's limits. In 1984 the Office of Management and Budget redefined its standards for U.S. metropolitan areas. The restructured program, which will be implemented over four years beginning in 1987, will evaluate ninety sample areas rather than the current seventy. |
