The revised CPI reflects changes in population distribution and spending patterns. The relative importance of food expenditures has declined while that of some new products and services has grown. As a result, there will be new indexes for new products, and less detail will be provided for categories whose importance is diminishing. The definitions in the new item indexes combine some items and add some new ones, while other new definitions reflect conceptual changes. Starting in 1987, indexes will be published less frequently—semiannuallly rather than bimonthly—for twelve geographic areas. Tables list geographic sample areas with their publication schedules and changes in series titles and definitions.
