      ab: According to a study published in Nature (Vol. 322, No. 6077), a fully intact right-brain hemisphere is not essential to using American Sign Language (ASL). Some psychologists believe that the spatial nature of ASL means that it is represented in the right hemisphere; others argue that it resides in the left hemisphere because it is a language. Physicians who performed brain surgery on an ASL interpreter discovered that temporarily interrupting the functioning of her left hemisphere with a barbiturate created serious problems with her ability to speak English and use ASL. Command of both languages returned as the drug wore off. The physicians were then able to operate on the woman's right hemisphere with the knowledge that they would not be impairing her ASL skills.
