| Summary: | The 1980s were marked by job growth and shifts in industry. Although there was uneven growth in service sector industries, just over three-fourths of all jobs are now in the service sector. The service industries, which include business, health, and other general services, were responsible for half of all job growth in the decade. The goods-producing sector, meanwhile, experienced a decline in its share of jobs. Mining lost 25 percent of its employment, while manufacturing lost 7 percent over the decade.
