      ab: Recent studies of familiar-voice recognition indicate that communication through speech and language is not mediated solely through the left hemisphere of the brain. Researchers who studied brain-damaged persons found that right-hemisphere damage interfered with the ability to recognize familiar voices but that damage to the left hemisphere did not. This may be because people recognize familiar voices by overall patterns rather than by familiar features. There is some evidence that the right hemisphere is superior to the left at pattern recognition. The ability to recognize a voice and the ability to discriminate between different voices appear to be separate skills. It also seems that nonverbal information in speech is processed by the right hemisphere.
