One explanation that has been offered is that manufacturing companies are increasingly attempting to cut overhead by turning to companies that specialize in service activities, but this “unbundling” theory seems to account for only a small percentage of the recent employment growth of producer services industries, such as advertising, data processing, and management consulting services. Producer services industries are examined, and several possible explanations for their growth are reviewed.
