      ab: The hemispheres of the brain may be specialized for different kinds of emotional experience, according to controversial research. A woman who suffered seizures was found to suffer from depression after left-hemisphere attacks and from mania after right-hemisphere attacks. Neurologists have long noticed that patients with right-hemisphere injuries tended to be apathetic while patients with left-hemisphere injuries became depressive. One study concluded that lesions in the front part of the brain tended to result in intensified emotional responses. One researcher speculates that disturbances in mood for people with normal brain functions occur when one hemisphere's functioning becomes too strong or too weak and overrides or gives way to the other hemisphere's control.
