Houses will be equipped with central computer-processing systems operated by voice command or visual input that will coordinate security and surveillance. Doors and windows will have sensors capable of relaying information about tampering or forced entry to the main computer. In addition to providing security-access control, central house computers will adjust temperature and air flow levels. In the event of tighter government regulations, they may even monitor the consumption of water, electricity, and other resources. Because of their dependence on expensive technology, these systems will be susceptible to power outages and may only be available to affluent homeowners. Unless designers strive to make future residences more open, these systems may also create fortress-like conditions leading to a sense of isolation.
