The extensive restructuring of the organic chemicals industry in recent years may have laid the foundation for long-term productivity increases. Specialty chemicals appear to offer better prospects for growth than do commodity chemicals, a portion of the industry in which the few potential high-growth areas include octane enhancers and methanol fuels.
