| Sumario: | The writer discusses the contributions to the 50th anniversary issue of the journal Commentary and that journal's political stance. The journal invited writers to discuss whether U.S. society was unraveling under the pressures of multiculturalism and/or racial polarization, unchecked immigration, increased economic and social stratification, distrust of authority, and the dissolution of shared moral and religious values. Virtually all of the 72 contributors were conservative, and in their work, complaints about moral decline were fairly general. For the first 25 years of its existence, Commentary could have been described as “critical liberal” in outlook, but today it specializes in attacking the Left and liberalism. Commentary utterly fails to recognize any ground between its assaults on the Left and the “political correctness” that it targets.
