If there is any grounds for feminism claiming a special relationship with socialism, it is to be found in the socialist critique of privacy and the way that this revealed the particular limitations of the domestic sphere to socialists. Today's socialists are more continually aware of the needs of sexual equality than their predecessors: In Britain, as elsewhere in Europe, it has been parties on the Left that have been most eager to accelerate the process of change. Sexual equality is the one area where intense ideas of strict equality are still essential. Socialism may make real the liberal idea that differences and inequalities have to be detached from the accident of being born male or female. |
