ab: The writer considers the work of Pierre Bonnard (1867-1947) in the wake of the Bonnard retrospective at New York's Museum of Modern Art in summer 1998. Bonnard was never a particular favorite of American collectors because he did not easily categorize into any narrative of modern art. This retrospective revealed Bonnard to be a modern, restless, original, and self-conscious artist. It is concluded that he found a niche between modernism and impressionism, between the intimate portrayal of domestic subjects and the expressive potential of saturated color and abstract design.
