ab: Over half of new personal-computer software is currently produced through object-orientation, and the technique has brought the art of writing computer programs much closer to being a branch of engineering. Prior to the invention of the object-oriented programming system (OOPS), computer scientists had strict rules about separating data from instructions, or “units” and “functions,” that frequently led to complicated programs that were difficult to modify. However, OOPS deliberately combines the data and code into single entities called objects. The task of writing programs has been streamlined by the use of such objects. The writer discusses the class system operation in object-orientation, the science of writing an object-oriented program, and the developments that have permitted the emergence of object-orientation.
