| Sumario: | A study was conducted to evaluate the importance of risk and protection in understanding diverse behavioral outcomes in adolescence. Date were drawn from a five-state sample of 6th- to 12th-grade students. Findings reveal that it is necessary for policies and programs for prevention to prioritize risk reduction and promote protective factors, in order to reduce crime, violence, and substance use among adolescents and to improve academic performances. It is concluded that an important aspect of on-going community-centered processes of prevention programs designed to address risk and protective factors that are most prevalent in neighborhoods or community is the value that geographically specific epidemiological factors would be to local prevention planners.
